“The Gita for Kids” - Roopa Pai
I really want to love this book; I believe it fills a critical gap in communicating the ancient wisdom of the Gita to a young audience. I admire Pai for trying to distill this complex knowledge.
I started a nightly read out-loud with my older children.
Thoughts so far:
Pai is a lover of adjectives and run-on sentences. As I read out-loud, I find myself skipping portions of the narrative that are redundant or just plain confusing. Pai also vacillates regularly between stilted bro-speak (sorry for the lack of better description), and the voice of your favorite elementary teacher. I much prefer the latter.
She is trying a little too hard to be perceived as “hip”, to the point of being distracting from her main message. But she does set up good places to pause, close the book, and recap with the kids.
I love the objective of this book, and there is indeed much to enjoy. At the moment, it’s about skipping over parts that have less relevance. We will continue working through it, and I will report back.
