“Why Not Me” - Mindy Kaling
Kaling’s collection of essays jumps around whimsically from topic to topic, sort of like what you’d expect IRL of Kaling’s public persona. I highly recommend going the audiobook route on this one.
I was on the edge of my elliptical listening to Kaling narrate the will they/won’t they details of her Obama-administration romance; it read like a six episode arc on “The Mindy Project”. The only part that was a little meh for me, was the Harvard commencement bit toward the end which seemed like a bit of an add-on to meet publisher page requirements.
I might have to go back and give “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” another read. I didn’t love it. But I may have read it too closely after Tina Fey’s “Bossypants”, and that is an unfair comparison.
“Why Not Me” is a fun book. To borrow Kaling’s own metaphor, she does not go full Hare Krishna on us; she is earnest, but not too often.
