“The Sun and Her Flowers” - Rupi Kaur
🔅 Rupi Kaur’s second poetry anthology is centered on themes of love, loss, and rebirth. She reflects her own journey acknowledging traumas, honoring her past, and ultimately reaching a place of self-love.
🔅 While the book is divided into sections, the arrangement of the poems still seems haphazard.
🔅I prefer more lyrical, evocative poetry, where the beauty lies in the arrangement of the words. Many of Kaur’s messages are powerful, but her style is spartan; a staccato grouping of words that feels less poetic and more prose-like in places.
🔅 This is a fiercely feminist ode to survivors and immigrants, fighters and nurturers, girls and women. But it wasn’t for me. I had to push myself to finish it. But her words may resonate with others, particularly with those who have suffered trauma or loss.
N.B. some of the poems/illustrations are explicit.
TW: sexual assault, domestic violence, female feticide/infanticide, self-harm, depression
