“Silent Voices” - Ann Cleeves
🛶 Another winner from Ann Cleeves! Vera Stanhope is confronted by several cases - old and new - that are connected, pointing to an unstable killer who is poised to strike again. I love how Cleeves merges seemingly unrelated cases and public feuds that all come to bear on the present case that Vera stumbles upon when she discovers the dead body.
🛶 As with the other Stanhope novels, the theme of sleepy villages with dangerous undercurrents sustained by long, unforgotten memories, is crucial in SV. Vera has to dig just as much in the history of village dramas as she does in the present state of affairs.
🛶 Connie is a young, single mom trying to escape the notoriety that came with her connection to a murder case. In search of anonymity, she hopes that a leaky, old cottage in a small village will help her recover. Instead, she finds herself living among openly hostile villagers led by a woman who seems to be hiding from her own past.
