“The Glass Room” - Ann Cleeves
(Vera Stanhope book 5)
🔪 I loved the setting for this murder mystery - it’s a swanky retreat for wannabe writers, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The detail Cleeves gives us of the physical space of the house forms a contrast to the sleepy villages and backwoods cabins we often find in Stanhope mysteries. The atmosphere alternately feels like an English country house party and a real life game of Clue. Come to think, there is a conservatory…
🔪 This is truly my favorite type of whodunit set up: the sprawling home, filled with guests and secrets, and the sinister feeling that there is (Aunt Agatha homage forthcoming) a cat among the pigeons.
“There are too many connections in this case, she thought now. The Writers’ House had sucked them all in together and created too many suspects with a shared history.”
