“Flying Too High” - Kerry Greenwood
🛩️ With her generosity and death defying antics, Phryne reminds me of a grown up Pippi Longstocking. It seems like Phryne devises most outlandish means for achieving her results and I am here for it.
🛩️ If you’re looking for a low-tension, golden age mystery, this series is for you! Phryne’s escapades are whimsical and over-the-top. James Bond himself, would envy Phryne’s seemingly never-ending bag of tricks. What I love the most about her is her daring fashion and the fact that she is never nonplussed, come what may.
If you can suspend disbelief, this is a delightful series anchored by a tough-as-nails protagonist that you can’t help but adore. As of this writing, I’ve finished book 5 in the series and I show no signs of stopping.
🛩️ In addition to Phryne, FTH sees the return of several secondary characters who already charmed us in the first book. Dot, who Phryne previously rescued from a dismal situation, is now firmly ensconced as Phryne’s maid/secretary/confidant/sidekick. The amiable Cec and world-wise Bert return as Phryne’s ever-willing partners in detection.
Phryne leaves her fancy hotel suite and purchases a permanent residence in Australia. We meet the loyal and ever-so-proper Mr. and Mrs. Butler, who, although originally scandalized by Phryne’s rather liberal lifestyle, soon conclude that she’s got a heart of gold.
🛩️ In FTH a hysterical society matron approaches Phryne with a premonition that her son will murder her husband. When that husband is later found dead, Phryne is called upon to prove the son’s innocence…if she can. There is also a secondary case involving a kidnapped child. We learn in FTH that where children are concerned, Phryne will risk it all to protect them.
