“The Lost for Words Bookshop” - Stephanie Butland
📖 On the whole, enjoyable, but certainly a predictable read. Our heroine, Loveday is someone you can’t help but root for, much like Eleanor Oliphant (of “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine”, a decidedly unpredictable novel).
📖 The non-linear narrative strikes again in TLWB. We’ve got Loveday’s tale told variously in 2013, 1999, and 2016 (present). The portions from the POV of 9-year-old Loveday read like the “Ramona” books and felt very nostalgic.
📖 I did learn something new: Loveday is a traditional Cornish name, and not the result of hippy parents as I at first had assumed.
📖 I didn’t understand how Melodie’s pidgin English contributed to the story or her character development meaningfully. I was puzzled by that. I should also note for readers a trigger warning: DV. Please proceed with caution.
