Review: “Winterhouse” by Ben Guterson

📚 I picked this at random from my middle grade TBR based on library availability. It just so happened to be another hotel-based mystery featuring a plucky orphan (on the heels of reading “Warren the 13th”). Do check out the illustrations on this one if you audiobook it!
📚The pacing here is significantly slower than the Warren books; it’s not zany like Warren either. Elizabeth is an introspective and more serious heroine befitting a middle grade as opposed to purely elementary level novel, Elizabeth isn’t painted as an angelic do-gooder. The choice between good and evil is just that: a choice. Every one of us has the capacity for both.
📚If your middle-schooler or older elementary-aged readers enjoyed this book, good news, there are 2 more novels in the series. We at the @soniyasreads home can endorse “The Secrets of Winterhouse”. We haven’t tackled the third one…yet!

📚 Some potential summer reading inspo with heroic preteens and teens. Two of these get name dropped in this book because Elizabeth is a voracious reader.
