Review: “The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches” by Sangu Mandanna

✨ This is almost a middle grade novel except for 1 major caveat that pushes it squarely into YA land. It so happens that the caveat is my only teeny tiny gripe with this otherwise utterly charming novel. The caveat is a singularly clumsy spicy scene that crops up toward the end of the novel. IMO it could have been omitted. Its sudden (and oddly detailed) appearance is jarring given the Disney-like quality of the rest of the novel.
✨ TVSSIW is mostly a warm, wholesome novel about love, found family, and belonging. There’s humorous banter and a predictable enemies to lovers romance. There’s relationship between Mika and the young girls takes centerstage. I loved the residents of Nowhere House, but Jamie is a real drag so I found the Mika-Jamie angle to be boring. I would’ve liked to see more of the Primrose-Mika relationship.
✨ The companion novel to TVSSIW doesn’t seem to require reading this one beforehand.

✨If you enjoyed TVSSIW, these novels touch on many of the same themes.
